Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 2026
The Eighth is built around the idea that civic information should be useful without being invasive. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what we do not do.
What we collect
- Email sign-ups: email address and, optionally, ZIP code and areas of interest so we can tailor occasional updates to your jurisdiction. The Eighth is not a newsletter and does not promise a recurring publishing schedule.
- Resident submissions: concerns, event submissions, and resource suggestions, including any contact information you provide so we can follow up.
- Analytics: aggregate, non-identifying counts of page views, sponsor impressions, and clicks. We use a session identifier to avoid double-counting; we do not link it to your identity.
- Account information: if you sign in (admins, staff), your email and authentication metadata managed by our auth provider.
What we do not do
- We do not sell or rent your personal information.
- We do not share your email with sponsors or third parties.
- We do not run third-party advertising networks or behavioral ad trackers.
- We do not build political voter files or target political messaging.
How we use information
- To send occasional updates from The Eighth, tailored by jurisdiction and stated interests.
- To review and, where appropriate, act on resident concerns and submissions.
- To measure aggregate engagement so we can improve the platform and report performance to sponsors in aggregate, non-identifying form.
Cookies and storage
We use minimal first-party storage required to keep you signed in (if applicable) and to maintain an anonymous analytics session. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.
Data retention
Email list entries are kept until you ask to be removed. Concern and submission records are kept as long as needed to act on them and maintain an audit trail. Analytics events are retained in aggregate form.
Your choices
- Ask to be removed from The Eighth list at any time by emailing privacy@theeighth.org.
- Request deletion of submissions you've made by emailing privacy@theeighth.org.
Children
The Eighth is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes
If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify subscribers by email.
